Barbados inflicted their second thrashing in two straight nights on St Lucia when the two teams met in Game 2 of the Goodwill Netball Series at the Netball Stadium on Thursday.
After establishing a slow 12-8 lead in the first of six 15-minute sessions, Barbados exploded to a 61-35 triumph with Graydon Sealy student Shonica Wharton leading the attack with 25 goals from 38 attempts.
Combermere student Sheniqua Thomas enjoyed a night in the goal-attack position, sinking 17 of 25.
Coaches Anna Shepherd and Sandra Bruce-Small gave adequate court time to all of the reserves, with Rhea Bryant scoring 5-7, and Faye Sealy adding 5-9. Starter Nikita Piggott scored nine from 13.
Indira Laurencia was the leading scorer for the visitors with 15 goals from 20 attempts, with six-footers Rhe-Ann Niles and Shonette Bruce frustrating Janva Hippolyte, who only made eight of her 24 shots.
Contributions came from Shem Maxwell (5-7), Enalie John (4-8) and Germain Fenelon (3-5).
It was only in the fifth session with Barbados attempting to maximize a variety of combinations that St Lucia rallied to almost match the hosts ten goals to seven. However, Barbados still dominated every session moving from 12-8 to 26-13, 32-17, 42-21 and 52-28 before clinching the series 61-35.
Barbados started with Wharton and Piggott in the shooting circle, Bruce and Niles – who was injured on the first night – in the defence circle with captain Latonia Blackman, Sabreena Smith and Jeneice Clarke running the mid-court.
By establishing such a commanding advantage Barbados smoothly introduced Cyrus, Bryant, Cherise Seale, Springer student Shonte Seale, Vanessa Bobb of Queen’s College, Sealy and Shanice Wharton. It was almost overkill when Thomas and Samantha Browne were given their runs at the St Lucians.
The final game was to be contested last night.
