Close call for Minister

PORT OF SPAIN – The actions of officers from the North Eastern Division Task Force and the Morvant Police Station Thursday morning led to the death of a 21-year-old man.
It may have also saved the life of Minister in the Ministry of the People and Social Development Vernella Alleyne-Toppin and relatives of murder victims nine-year-old Jadel Holder and 15-year-old Jamal Holder.
According to police reports, North Eastern Division Police were preparing to facilitate the request of an escort for the minister to the home of the two deceased brothers along Petunia Avenue, Morvant, when they received information that three armed assailants had been observed walking along a track which led from Mon Repos Road, Morvant, to Petunia Avenue.
As a result of this information, two parties of officers were dispatched to Mon Repos Road and Petunia Avenue.
Police reported that at about 10:05 a.m. while the minister was in transit to the home, the officers who went to Mon Repos Road, observed three men walking along the bank of the river south of the roadway.
Police reports indicate that upon seeing the police, the three men reportedly pulled out firearms and began shooting at the officers.
The lawmen drew their licensed firearms and returned fire.
In the ensuring shoot-out, one man was hit multiple times about the body, while the two other assailants fled the scene.
The officers gave chase, but they were unable to locate the suspects.
A .38 revolver and a quantity of ammunition were reportedly recovered near the injured man, who was later identified as 21-year-old Chaquille McCoy aka Chaquille Paul, from Mon Repos Road, Morvant. (Express)
