HOUSE OF SOCA signalled its entry into the 2014 Crop Over calypso season with a tastefully organised launch at the Pure Ocean Restaurant, St Lawrence last night; and based on a sneak preview coming from young calypsonians Sharky and Sammi G, the tent seems to be on the right track for good calypsos this season.
The guests also heard from two government ministers Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley and Adriel Brathwaite Attorney-General and Home Affairs minister who were present at the head table.
Lashley, in his wide-ranging address, also invited all tents to familiarise themselves with the Cultural Industries Act – which is yet to be proclaimed.
Brathwaite lauded the House of Soca for its contribution to the calypso art form over the years.
Manager of House of Soca Sharon Carew-White was very upbeat about the tent’s offerings this year as she gave an overview of preparations.
Saying that she had lost her brother to lung cancer Carew –White also said there would be breakfast show July 12 at Lears Plantation as an act of cancer awareness.
“I think it is important to find a way to assist those persons diagnosed with cancer. We would dedicate this [to] raising funds for this chronic disease.”
The tent opens June 22 at St Leonard’s Boys’ School. (JS)
