Unemployment benefit for National Conservation Commission (NCC) workers is no longer in abeyance, says the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW).
In a written statement from the NUPW, the union said yesterday that the matter had been clarified after discussions with the director of national insurance.
“All retrenched NCC workers are hereby advised to make their claims for unemployment benefit as soon as possible,” said NUPW general secretary Dennis Clarke.
Nearly 200 NCC workers were retrenched in April, leading to meetings between their representative unions and management, the Labour Department and the Minister of Labour before an intervention by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who referred the matter to the Employment Rights Tribunal last monthend.
