A 64-YEAR-OLD man escaped with nothing but his undergarments after an early morning fire at Brittons Hill, St Michael, yesterday.
Everton Crichlow’s home was destroyed while a house next door, which was vacant, was extensively damaged.
A shocked Crichlow told the Saturday Sun he lost everything to the fire and did not know what his next step would be.
He recalled waking up yesterday morning to what he later learnt was fire.
“All I managed to do is come out with my bare undergarments, no shoes on my feet… I was unable to save anything,” he said.
Crichlow said he managed to safely get out of the house without sustaining any injuries, adding that he wasn’t aware of how the fire started.
His family members were on hand and stood by his side and offered him clothing.
His mother, Lolita Oliver, was in tears and said she could not bear to see her son in such an unfortunate state.
“That’s my son and I’m hurt to see him like this. I didn’t know about the fire this morning . . . got to thank God for life . . . .
“He was living there for years and now my son has lost everything, didn’t even save anything,” she said.
Crichlow is expected to stay with his sister.
It is unclear as to whether the house was insured or not.
Fire officials from the Probyn Street, Bridgetown headquarters responded to the blaze, arriving on the scene with two water tenders. (BA)
