IT SHOULD BE an amazing display of colour when the expected 12 000 revellers and the thousands of others parading next to the ropes and behind the Roberts Manufacturing and HIV/AIDS Commission trucks take to the street today for Grand Kadooment, which is being staged in association with Buy Bajan.
The finale of the Sweetest Summer Festival should see a total of 26 bands parading on the extended route from the National Stadium to Spring Garden in the traditional beads and feathers and mostly brief costumes for those registered, and the contraptions worn by those who are just along for the free fun out of it.
Only 20 of the bands will actually face the judges. Two trucks will bring up the rear and provide music to entertain revellers who have not registered with a band and the other four, including Point d’Interrogation out of Guadeloupe, will just be along to be a part of the mas.
The trek from the Stadium, which should start around 8:30 a.m., is usually long and can present challenges when conditions are hot and humid. During those times it is not unusual to see people pouring water on themselves from cups and other containers or stepping into sprays from hoses supplied by people along the route. But if the forecast stays true, revellers should not have the heat to worry about.
