Cancer concern

THE INCIDENCE OF cervical cancer is rising in Barbados.
And specialists in the field are once again calling for greater awareness on female “below-the-belt” cancers.
“Latest figures show [cervical cancer] has climbed back up to 19 deaths. Is it complacency, or [Human Papilloma Virus]?” queried president of the Barbados Cancer Society, Dr Dorothy Cooke-Johnson, during the press launch of the Sagicor Globe-athon 2014, held at Sagicor Life’s Wildey, St Michael office this morning.
“It is time to challenge below-the-belt cancers and beat them by our togetherness and determination . . . by saying the words and not shrinking from them.”
Last year’s inaugural Globe-athon Barbados attracted thousands and was able to raise $56 000.  This year, it will be held on Sunday, September 7, and will take the form of a five-kilometre walk and run. The event is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. with a warm-up work-out at Bay Street Esplanade. The walk and run will course through Bridgetown through Roebuck Street, Crumpton Street and St Michael’s Row before returning to the Bay Street Esplanade via Probyn Street. (LW)
