MONTEGO BAY – The family of St James construction worker, Mario Deane, is to get an independent pathologist from overseas to observe his autopsy.
The Gleaner understands that as a result, the post mortem which was scheduled for today has been delayed at the request of the family. Attorney-at-law, Michael Lorne, who is representing the family informed the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court of the development yesterday. In the meantime, Montego Bay attorney Stacy-Ann Young has been retained to represent Mervin Orr, 35, one of two inmates the police have charged with Deane’s murder. Orr, a resident of the Chance Rehabilitation Centre, who reportedly escaped from that facility, was in custody for theft at the time of Deane’s beating. His lawyer says while in police custody, Orr missed his hospital appointment for treatment. The other accused, Adrian Morgan, 25, has been transferred to the Spanish Town Adult Correctional Centre for psychiatric evaluation. Deane was beaten while in custody at the Barnett Street Police lock-up on August 3. Three days later he died in hospital. Three police personnel from the Barnett Street Police Station in St James have been interdicted and another three suspended with immediate effect in connection with the case. (Jamaica Gleaner)
