Sir Roy: Respect comes first

The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), which pulled out of the Social Partnership a year ago, may return but on its own terms.
BWU general secretary Sir Roy Trotman said Thursday that if the union linked up again with the labour/Government/employer partnership it would not be “to hew wood and fetch water”.
It could not be in an environment in which both public and private sector leaders continued to be disrespectful of workers’ rights and the issues labour faced, he said.
Sir Roy made the comments during a media briefing at the union’s Harmony Hall, St Michael complex.
He questioned the need for BWU involvement in the Social Partnership “if the private sector is going to systematically bypass all the traditions and the rules” governing labour-employer relations and insult the labour practices and practitioners in one way or another.
Sir Roy said the union was not interested in engaging in the Social Partnership with people just bent on “paying lip service”. (TY)
