Retired senior medical officer Dr Elizabeth Ferdinand was yesterday hailed as an “unsung hero” for her tireless work in public health in Barbados for the last 40 years.
In an intimate gathering nestled in the lush, well-appointed garden at the Wanstead Gardens, St James home of former Minister of Health Donville Inniss, Ferdinand was praised for her professionalism, leadership, dedication, unselfish attitude and caring approach.
Recounting Ferdinand’s leadership in the establishment of the medical team to deal with mass casualty events, Dr Ingrid Cumberbatch said the 66-year-old had left a legacy to be proud of.
Cumberbatch’s sentiments were captured in the impromtu presentations of the other speakers, all Ministry of Health staff. But it was Inniss, who said he was deputising for his wife, presently overseas, who proved to be the most hilarious and complimentary.
“Our health care system is richer for the contribution of Elizabeth Ferdinand,” said Inniss.
