There might be instances of gender discrimination in Barbados.
But Minister of Labour, Senator Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo believes that identifying and analysing instances of gender biases are key to gender mainstreaming in the island.
Addressing labour management officials from across the Americas at the opening of the Inter-American Network for Labour Administration (RIAL) workshop at Hilton Barbados today, she said Government had a strong interest in incorporating gender mainstreaming into legislation, policies and programmes.
She told the gathering that with such an approach, instances of gender inequality – not only in the labour market, but throughout society – could be reduced.
She said her ministry would be adopting a scientific approach to dealing with the matter and this would include collaborating with agencies such as the Bureau of Gender Affairs and the Barbados Statistical Services.
She noted that specific data would be collected, analysed and used as the basis for certain new approaches.
