Repeat Goddard Enterprises Limited Division 1 volleyball queens Flow Sentry Brokers Deacons moved to within one game of a perfect season while former kings Gourmet Xpress Progressive surrendered their shot at the men’s crown on Monday night at the Wildey Gym.

Deacons advanced to a 9-0 record and a maximum 45 points by crushing Carlton 25-13, 25-19, 25-15. Carlton, with a 1-7 record and seven points, are guaranteed the cellar position for 2014.

Club United came from two sets down and 20-23 in the third set to defeat Toners 16-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-7. Club have 19 points with one game in hand while the Toners have 17 points with two matches to play.

The men’s action saw Deacons eliminating Gourmet Xpress Progressive from the cup race.

Deacons easily stopped Progressive 25-21, 25-16, 25-18 to join defending champions Chargers on 37 points with two games to play. Progressive, having lost three games, remain on 26 points.

A superlative performance in attack from junior Adam Niles, Klode Thompson and Barbados’ libero Sheldon Roach overshadowed Elwyn Oxley’s return to Division One volleyball.

Ironically, while Deacons destroyed Progressive with spikes and blocks, the former champions spent a great deal of time and energy complaining about the officiating.

Cawmere eased past the Juniors to move to 15 points by beating them 25-22, 25-14, 21-25, 26-24.

A generous decision to rest Shawn Simpson for calypsonian Fabian Bartlett almost struck the wrong note for Cawmere as the Juniors grabbed the chance and the fourth set.

The Juniors, who are on 13 points, will need to win their remaining two games to take the fourth spot from Cawmere. (KB)
