Barbadians have been urged to see Saturday’s lighting ceremony as a symbol of the island’s achievements since gaining independence 48 years ago.
Minister of Culture, Sport and Youth, Stephen Lashley made the exhortation at the national event to launch a month of celebrations in the run-up to Independence on November 30.
The minister asserted that there were many privileges that Barbadians took for granted. He said while there was “some crime” in Barbados, compared to crime globally, “Barbados is one of the safest places in the world”.
In addition, he said despite the island’s current financial challenges it allocated “more money every year to critical areas like health and education than many other countries which are much larger and have far greater resources than we do”.
“I want to challenge all Barbadians to join me in seeing this lighting ceremony as a symbol of our enlightenment to the achievement of our small country since we became an independent [country] 48 years ago,” he said.
