Government is to look at the enforcement of child maintenance orders on non-nationals from the Caribbean as well as those with second homes here from places such as Canada.
That’s according to Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, who was speaking in the House of Assembly yesterday during debate on an amendment to the Maintenance Act, the main thrust of which is to permit men as well as guardians, along with mothers, to make applications for child support.
Apart from the call for gender neutrality in the law, Brathwaite noted that there was also a call for equal access after concerns were raised about men being asked to pay maintenance but then were denied visitation with the child being used as leverage or as a pawn after the breakdown of the relationship.
But the minister noted that while the measure dealt with child maintenance, there were some other areas which should be addressed in any future amendments. (AB)
