Progressive take KO crown

Former giants Gourmet Xpress Progressive are the kings of Goddard Enterprises Limited senior volleyball knockouts.

In a rivalry dating back three decades, the founding member of the sport in Barbados defeated another founding member, Deacons, 29-27, 25-22, 16-25, 25-18 at the Wildey Gym on Sunday night. The last time that Progressive won a Division 1 crown was in 2010, and that was the knockout title.

The men’s battle was considered an open affair after the greatest threat, Chargers, did not defend in 2014. However, on Sunday night Progressive exploited a subpar performance from Deacons to exact vengeance for the many seasons where the St George team had to settle for the second spot.

With Barbados setter Ronald Rice out of the island and next best choice Patrick Oxley opting to officiate at the Massy United Insurance Clash of the Titans road tennis tournament at The Villages in Coverley, Deacons’ offensive hopes were resting in the hands of St Leonard’s student Ahkeem Mayers.
