Ronald “Yankee” Harding was the lone ranger in cycling on the Barbados team at this year’s Huntsman Senior Games in Utah from October 7 to 10, but that didn’t stop him from bringing home four medals.
The 60-year-old Harding, who still competes on the local scene in the Barbados Cycling Union’s events for the Fugen cycling team, has been a regular at the games over the last few years.
But this time, Harding had to do it all by himself and he not only put in the hard work but also showed the necessary discipline, determination and strength of character to succeed.
Riding in Division 2 of the 50-64 age category, Harding competed in four races – The 16-K Criterium, the 5-K Hill Climb, the 40-K Time Trial and 62-K Road Race.
It was a tough task for Harding but he was still able to medal in each discipline, bringing home one gold, two silvers and a bronze medal.
The affable Harding can still be seen training on the highways and byways of Barbados daily, some days riding 100 miles or more.
Only last week Sunday, Harding took part in the annual Long Bay 5-K cycle race in St Philip, which was won by Edwin Sutherland, and finished a commendable third. (EZS)
