Kensington Oval, considered the mecca of cricket in the Caribbean, won’t be hosting a match anytime soon.
The specially designed hybrid grass field at the multimillion-dollar facility has been over-run with foreign grass (devil grass), which could result in the historic venue being unable to host any of Barbados’ five home matches in the new professional franchise league which starts this week.
Chief executive officer of Kensington Oval Management Incorporated (KOMI), Ben Toppin, told the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday that repair of the field had started, but it would take between four or five months for all foreign grass to be removed.
Toppin revealed that KOMI would soon be meeting with Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) officials to discuss how the outfield at Kensington should be treated and maintained in the future. The BCA has been responsible for the field’s maintenance since June last year.
