Town planning body needs ‘more money’

BARBADIAN CIVIL ENGINEER Gregory Hazzard is urging the Town and Country Development Planning Office to “fight hard with the Minister of Finance, all the time, for more money”.

The director of Mahy Ridley Hazzard Engineers Ltd. identified the lack of adequate financial resources as one of a dozen inhibitors to the department’s effectiveness.

“. . .More money, so that you can grow your resources and constantly improve the efficiency of your department. You needs lots of money to achieve what the public, Government, developers and industry professionals ask of you,” Hazzard told an audience that included Acting Chief Town Planner George Browne other officers of the Government department.

He was speaking this morning during a seminar on town planning issues organised by the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the department at the BCCI’s conference room.

In addition to increased funding, Hazzard said there was a need for the planning office to have “a dedicated section for Government projects”, “phase approvals to reduce the cost of preparing applications”, and “vary from 28 days the time permitted to submit additional information”. (SC)
