As the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) prepares to sign a four-year agreement with the Barbados Light & Power (BL&P) tomorrow, some of its members are threatening industrial action to show their dissent.
And if the action does go ahead, it would primarily affect the island’s major generating plant at Spring Garden, St Michael.
The discord is due to the introduction of a flexible working arrangement at the BL&P, involving limiting working time to 40 hours a week, any five days in six – Monday to Saturday – eight hours a day between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
The introduction of this would eliminate the hefty payments incurred for overtime when the company is undertaking major projects, overhauling equipment and doing emergency work. Most of the technical staff at Spring Garden would be affected by this move.
