Lowe not budging

Minister of the Environment and Drainage Dr Denis Lowe remains firm in his stance on gender-neutral legislation in Barbados.

“I will not move from my position. I will not recant from my conscience,” he told the media yesterday on hearing that a section of the local gay and lesbian community had called for his resignation because of his stated position.

“The only call for my resignation that matters is the call from the Prime Minister. If the Prime Minister calls tomorrow and says ‘Mr Minister, I am revoking your appointment as a minister of the Crown’, that would cause me concern,” he declared.

“I don’t believe I have made any comment that would have required my resignation as a free-thinking citizen of a human community endowed with the freedom of will to speak freely on anything that I so desire and to express my preference for choice.” (GC)
