The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) will soon find itself facing penalties if it does not meet service standards set for local utility companies by the Fair Trading Commission (FTC).

Chairman of the BWA Dr Attlee Brathwaite reported this yesterday, while announcing that the utility “is again under the full regulatory purview of the Fair Trading Commission”.

Brathwaite said during a BWA project groundbreaking ceremony at Foursquare Plantation in St Philip: “We have been informed by the FTC that BWA will be regulated initially on its standard of service and the FTC has already commenced dialogue with the BWA with respect to the setting of its service standards and its associated penalties for not meeting these standards.”

Brathwaite pointed out that the authority was not against regulation. (TY)
