Government has given an assurance of its commitment to the viability of the sugar industry.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart outlined his administration’s position when he met with representatives from owners, labour and government industry officials yesterday during talks at government headquarters.

The Prime Minister explained that the meeting had been convened as a result of letters he received from the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) and the Barbados Sugar Industry Limited (BSIL) requesting dialogue on the state of the sugar industry.

“We are still committed to a sugar industry in the short-term, and our medium-term goal is to transform it into a sugar cane industry. But there have to be significant structural changes in the industry,” he assured those present. (BGIS)
