CGI Maple’s bowlers saved their team blushes after a below-par batting display and spurred the St James-based club to their third Sagicor General Super Cup limited overs cricket title, yesterday.

After losing the last two finals to UWI and LIME, Maple again showed their bowling strength by defending a modest total of 141 in 49.1 overs to beat ESAF Pickwick by 40 runs in a low-key final before fewer than 200 spectators at the 3Ws Oval.

Pickwick, who had stifled the Maple batsmen on a tricky pitch which offered the bowlers generous assistance, suffered a sensational middle and lower order collapse.

They limped from 82 for three after 27 overs, to be all out for a meagre 101 in 38.2 overs, as Maple finally added to their 1977 and 1980 triumphs when the competition was played over 40 overs per innings.

The experienced Khalid Springer followed up a vital knock of 29 off 32 balls with three wickets – including two with his first two deliveries – for 19 runs in five overs, to be the undisputed Man-of-the-Match.
