Barbados take second judo spot

BARBADOSā€ˆhad to settle for second position behind overall winners Guadeloupe at the MMX14 International Judo Tournament, hosted by the Barbados Judo Association at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium last Saturday.

Guadeloupe copped an overall 51 medals, including 26 gold, 17 silver and eight bronze while Barbados gained 29 medals, consisting of eight gold, ten silver and 11 bronze.

Trinidad and Tobago were third with seven medals ā€“ four gold, one silver and two bronze.

In keeping with this yearā€™s tournament theme Unlock Your Greatness, the competitors displayed a wide range of of techniques and strategic skills, resulting in 85 per cent ippons overall.

This high level of competition was demonstrated by the senior, junior, cadets, juvenile and infantile judokas with several exciting matches.

The matchup between infantile Kilian Perianian of Guadeloupe, who won the 23kgs and Ethan Warner of Barbados brought the crowd alive while the contest between Barbadian Justin Boyce, who won the 81kg bout against Alix Angely of Guadeloupe, added more excitement to the event.

However, the stunning display of determination and willpower by Asa Weithers of Barbados, who triumphed in the Under-66kgs against Guadeloupeā€™s Kevin Clergent brought the crowd to their feet.

Weithers executed a spectacular throw to nail the win.
