ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) – Michael Clarke has retired injured on 60 runs on the opening day of the first Test against India with an apparent back problem.

Clarke, who fought hamstring and back injuries over the past two months, appeared to twist his back while trying to avoid a short ball about a half-hour before tea.

Despite receiving treatment from Australian physiotherapists, Clarke had to leave the ground to generous applause from the Adelaide Oval crowd.

He and opener David Warner, who earlier scored his 10th Test century, had combined for a century partnership.
