A MAN is in police custody following the chopping of a woman in Haggatt Hall, St Michael, behind Sky Mall this morning.
The incident reportedly occurred around 7 a.m. after the woman was on her way home from taking her daughter to a friend, who usually takes the child to school.
Residents told the NATION ONLINE the man, who is the father of the child, pounced on the woman, attacking her with a cutlass.
He reportedly chopped her about the head and on her hands. The woman received deep cuts, particularly on her hands, and at least one of her fingers was partially severed.
The woman was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance where she is said to be in critical condition.
Police public relations officer, Acting Assistant Superintendent David Welch, said the man was held shortly after they arrived on the scene. He is being questioned.
Welch said the matter is being treated as a case of domestic violence. (SP)
