WILDEY MASTERS won their first KFC Banks Exactly Masters Football Classic championship with a close 1-0 victory over the previously unbeaten Claytons Kola Tonic Notre Dame last Saturday at the Lumber Company grounds.
The first half was evenly poised, both teams sharing an equal amount of possession as they both opted to sit in and hit their speedy forwards on the break.
Notre Dame’s Greg Jones was the busier of the goalkeepers as he was threatened by the quality of the set-piece deliveries from former English Premiership player Gregory “Lalu” Goodridge, from all angles of the pitch.
After a goalless first half, the game got its lone goal in the 59th minute in rather peculiar fashion. A meaningless clearance from the Wildey penalty area, found its way bouncing around the Dames’ penalty area and there was a moment of confusion between Jones and one of his defenders, who was under pressure from Adrian “Red Rat” Mayers.
The Dames players got entangled with each other while the ball broke free favourably to an open goal which Mayers easily tucked away from just a couple yards out.
Dames, with their traditional never-say-die attitude threw everything at Wildey but they failed in all their efforts to lose their fourth final in this competition in the last five years. (ROG)
