PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AP) – Faf du Plessis’ century and subsequent dismissal were the only major events as rain permitted just six overs in the morning session of the second day of the second cricket Test between South Africa and West Indies at St George’s Park today.

South Africa remained in firm control in spite of losing Du Plessis, as it went to lunch on 289 for three, with Hashim Amla unbeaten on 23 and AB de Villiers on nine not out.

After early morning rain caused play to be delayed by 1 ½ hours, Du Plessis made an eventful start to the day as he resumed on 99 not out.

The right-hander hit the first ball to the square-leg boundary to reach his fourth Test century, but then feathered the next delivery from Jerome Taylor through to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Amla and De Villiers, who both scored centuries in the first Test, then added 15 runs before the rain returned to bring an early lunch.

South Africa lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning the first Test by an innings and 220 runs at Centurion.

Summarised scores: South Africa 289-3 in 94 overs (Dean Elgar 121, Faf du Plessis 103, H. Amla 23 not out) vs West Indies.
