THE TIME IT TAKES to clear a stinky skip opposite the Dover Beach facility in Christ Church is a concern for some business operators in the area.
They also claim that indiscriminate dumping by persons from outside the area is adding to the problem.
Yesterday, the DAILY NATION received a call from a concerned kiosk operator who said the stench was unacceptable, especially for a busy tourist area.
One vendor, who did not want to be identified, said the skip was there for the kiosk operators’ use but they were not solely responsible for generating the volume of garbage seen.
“Everybody come with their garbage and put it there. People come and stop, open their car trunks and you see construction material, even household items, coming out.
“The tourists pass on the other side of the road but the smell goes all the way down the road,” he said.
While noting there was a scheduled pick-up on Monday and Friday, the vendor said that needed to be increased.
Meanwhile, the owner of Daddy’s Restaurant and Bar said it was a constant problem.
He said though the smell did not really “run” his customers, it was not ideal for business since he ran a food establishment and had to prepare his food outdoors in the less than ideal conditions.
Andre Atkins, who works at a nearby hotel, said the skip should be moved to a different location, in an area not travelled frequently by tourists since the pile-up was unsightly and unhealthy. (LK)
