BARBADIANS FOLLOWED a northern star yesterday. And, not surprisingly, they ended up at North Stars.

The sleepy village of Crab Hill, St Lucy, saw hundreds turn up at the North Stars cricket pavilion, to view the body of former chairman of the National Housing Corporation and community stalwart Ashley Toppin, the day before his final journey.

Toppin, a businessman and cricket administrator, was one of the founding members of the St Lucy cricket club and was at the forefront of the move more than a decade ago to have the pristine grounds at North Stars host a first-class cricket match.

He will be interred at St Lucy’s Parish Church at 3:30 p.m. today.

Heading the list of people who viewed Toppin’s body yesterday were St Lucy Member of Parliament and Minister of Housing Denis Kellman; Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Maxine McClean, and former ministers Evelyn Greaves and Clyde Griffith. (BA)
