Jones’ warning

Except for a “mild” disruption stemming from a meeting called by the Barbados Union of Teachers, it was back to school for thousands of children across Barbados yesterday.

Minister of Education Ronald Jones said his ministry’s figures indicated about 800 of the 3 100 teachers in the system were not at their various schools, but he said the absence of that 26 per cent did not necessitate a closure of schools.

And while it might not have been the ideal return to the classroom after a seven-year break, new deputy at the Alma Parris School Bradston Clarke said it was “excellent” to be back.

Clarke said embattled principal Valdez Francis was accommodating and pulled him into things, which gave a feel of togetherness at the Speightstown, St Peter institution. (YB)
