SEVERAL MEMBERS of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) are calling for the intervention of Police Commissioner Dr Carl Williams to determine what has become of more than $30 million in sports club money drawn from their salaries while they were members of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF)
The cops say they have turned to the commissioner for help because their efforts to find out what became of the funds have proved futile.
Should the commissioner fail to get involved in the matter, the concerned cops say they plan on seeking legal advice.
“This money was taken from each member’s salary without consultation – $200 per month per member. Now that the ISCF is no more, we can’t hear anything about our money,” one of the concerned members told the Jamaica Observer.
“We should at least be consulted as to what was to be done with it. There was never an audit,” he said.
The Observer was yesterday unable to reach Williams or Deputy Commissioner Glemore Hinds for comment.
The money was reportedly withdrawn from the salaries of the approximately 2 019 members of the ISCF between 2008 and early last year when the ISCF merged with the JCF.
Yesterday, another cop said that during the discussions about the merger, ISCF members were told that a decision would have been taken as to what to do with the money.
“We have been trying to get answers,” he said in a dejected tone. “But we are hearing of expensive hotel and restaurant fees, and that the money was used to run the canteen at Harman Barracks. The food was being sold and there must have been a profit, so where is all that money?”
They are contending that members should get back what was withdrawn from their salaries. (Observer)
