“I’M REALLY SORRY; I wish I could have saved everybody,” said a solemn looking Ranavan Nanton, the driver of the minibus that plunged into the Atlantic Ocean off the north east coast of St Vincent on Monday, killing seven young passengers.
Breaking his silence for the first time, the youthful driver suggested the accident occurred because the vehicle’s brakes failed and, possibly, it struck a drain causing him to lose control before going over the embankment and falling into the raging sea hundreds of feet below.
Reliving the nightmare, Nanton told of how he managed to save at least four of his injured passengers from drowning, but could not reach the two brothers, Jamalie Edwards, 14, and Jemma Edwards, 12.
He was himself plucked from the turbulent waters when he no longer had any more energy and feared he, too, would die.
