Better bus service possible

BETTER CAN BE DONE for Barbadian commuters and it can happen now if there is a will to do it, says Morris Lee, president of the Association of Private Transport Operators (APTO).

He contends a more effective public transportation service for the present fare was possible, while eliminating the $65 million-plus subsidy Government pays for the Transport Board annually if duty-free concessions were granted to private sector vehicles (PSVs) to import new fuel efficient units, the cost of fuel was reduced, and operations of the public and private sectors were integrated.

Lee said it made sense going forward with this holistic approach as it would promote a better service with greater efficiency, reduce the fierce competitiveness that has led to recklessness on the road, and could lead to general profitability in the system.
