AFTER WEST INDIES won the fourth One-day International (ODI) against South Africa on Sunday in Port Elizabeth, I am sure that captain Jason Holder was able to breathe a sigh of relief and had a good night’s rest, knowing that the team would not be whitewashed.
That triumph broke the Caribbean side’s miserable losing slump in the five-match series which was Holder’s first as captain.
I am sure he was very frustrated about the way things had gone and began to express his feelings.
He was quoted as saying: “I am worried about the way we are going about our cricket. I think we can be a lot more respectable and put up our hands sometime when we make errors.”
I wonder if the senior players are giving him their support or even the whole team. I doubt very much. At 23, Holder was handed his first assignments – the current ODIs in South Africa and the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
He is younger than most of those playing under him. He was given a baptism of fire with those losses.
It seems as though there is not that much cooperation as far as I can read from this point.
“I am one to speak my mind, at times and when it was appropriate to speak my mind. I will speak my mind,” Holder said.
“It’s just about getting the message across and having players understand where I am coming from and I think once that is established, things will become a lot easier.”
After the World Cup, some experienced players should go and the rebuilding should start with Jason Holder and the young brigade.
We have to do it until we get it right and some day we will get it right.
