QC and BCC volleyball champions

QUEEN’S COLLEGE (QC) and the Barbados Community College are the undisputed champions of Massy Stores schools’ volleyball.

On Monday both teams predictably added the National Sports Council’s knockout crowns to their league titles but not without strong opposition. Unfortunately, Christ Church Foundation ended on the losing end of both the boys’ and girls’ knockout finals, which were staged at the Wildey Gymnasium.

QC girls repeated as champions 25-16, 24-26, 15-12 with a strong performance from six footer Kayla James, who proved to be the best blocker while scoring some fine kills. Best setter Rhea Carter, Tessalie Moore, Danielle Brathwaite and Aaliyah Durant put on a strong challenge for Foundation.

However, James, along with repeat MVP Janina Mayers, league MVP Ashley Marshall and setter Niara Forde, reduced the fears after Foundation had squeezed out the second set and looked like causing some panic in the decider.

Barbados junior captain and best spiker Andriy Stapleton looked capable of carrying Foundation to an upset victory when the boys took to the court but the combined strength of BCC saw them home 26-24, 24-26, 15-9.

Unbelievably Foundation led 7-3 in the decider but with Stapleton rotating to the back court BCC surged to 14-8, with double MVP Carlos Cyrus piloting the Eyrie lads to another volleyball crown.

Best setter Kemar Hinds, Cyrus, Best Defender, Stephen Packer, Shamir Williams, John Sampson and Attiba Best took charge of a match, as Foundation obviously lacked the support for Stapleton. Hinds, Best, Cyrus and Packer previously shared titles with Foundation when the quartet wore Coleridge & Parry colours. (KB)
