WOMEN ARE BEING ENCOURAGED to come forward and drive minibuses and ZR vans.

Chairman of the Alliance of Owners of Public Service Vehicles, Roy Raphael, says that he would like to see more women take up this offer.

And he is getting support from Morris Lee, interim chairman of the Association of Public Transport Operators (APTO).

Raphael told the DAILY NATION: “I’m urging some of those (women) who were laid off last year from the various Government agencies to take up the challenge. It is a good-paying job.”

Lee declared: “We would welcome women to come forward as drivers.”

The APTO head noted that less than 0.5 per cent of the drivers within the privately-controlled public service vehicle sector were female, but on the other hand a number of them were conductresses. He pointed to the success the state-owned Transport Board has had over many years with women as part of its corps of drivers.
