Hurricanes lack punch

HAVING WATCHED FIRST-CLASS CRICKET at Kensington Oval for close to half a century, I cannot vividly recall every match I have seen, but I am reasonably sure that the Leeward Islands Hurricanes on show over the last weekend would be among the weakest of opponents ever to take on Barbados at that venue.

The inadequacies of this team must not only be measured in terms of the scores, for it is possible to be completely outplayed without being horribly humiliated.

But humiliation is an emotion based on one’s expectations of self and the degree of pride. There was little to indicate that Sunday’s defeat by an innings and 190 runs was anymore disturbing to them than the poor performances of recent seasons that should have led them to address the issue of quality through the first player draft of the newly formed Caribbean Professional League.
