WANTED URGENTLY – a functioning, effective consumer organisation in Barbados.
It should be an independent entity with a strong monitoring mechanism which works closely alongside the relevant Government agencies to keep a close tab on prices and practices that could negatively impact consumers.
This is what former general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Dennis Clarke wants to see established here.
Clarke contends that such a body is needed to monitor things like the shelf life of goods and markups on products are within reason given their landed costs. The organisation should also be empowered to make checks on weights and measures apparatus to ensure the weight stated on the package offered for sale is what the consumer will get. (SP)
