THE DECISION of a Government agency to make itself the sole importer of poultry meats into Barbados has got some private sector operators fuming.

Last December, Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC) acting chief executive officer Glendene Bartlett wrote several businesses informing them that it had been “mandated to be the sole importer of poultry meats”.

The agency then requested the submission of information to allow the “BADMC . . . [to] import the product(s) on your behalf”. The agency said for the three-month period – December 9, 2014, to March 8, 2015, private entities would temporarily handle the imports during what it called the “transition period”. But the businesses are questioning  what authority BADMC was acting on.
