FOLLOWING THE heavy damage done to the onion industry, Barbados can’t afford to allow profit-hunting business people to continue to “sabotage” its productive sectors with “willy-nilly” imports.
This is the message which chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, has for the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI), its members and other importers, including those hoping to benefit from food sale contracts with local hotels.
During a media briefing in Queen’s Park yesterday on the fringes of a BAS meeting with sponsors of this month’s Agrofest, Paul said he was not making a “battle call” against the BCCI but indicated he had some reservations about its concern that the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation was to become the sole importer of poultry meats into Barbados.
Paul told reporters he had seen inappropriate importation wreck the “fledgling onion industry” and he did not want to see other industries become a victim. (TY)
