Bursaries ‘too late’

GOVERNMENT’S allocation of $3 million for bursaries for Barbadian students enrolled at the University of the West Indies (UWI) may have come a little too late, says president of the Guild of Students, Damani Parris.

He told reporters during a meeting at his office at the Cave Hill Campus yesterday that though he was appreciative of Government’s involvement, he believed the people for whom the bursaries were initially intended could not benefit from them since, by all accounts, they were forced to suspend their studies due to lack of finance.

Parris could not definitively state how many of the more than 1 600 who applied for scholarships failed to register for the 2014/2015 school year, but claimed that according to estimates, more than 1 600 students had dropped off the roll.
