THE HEAD OF THE Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) has taken the president of the West Indies Cricket Board Dave Cameron, to task.

During his opening remarks today to mark the start of the Week of Excellence at the Central Bank of Barbados, CTUSAB president Cedric Murrell, said the incident with Cameron and the tweet about Chris Gayle “rankled me over the last weekend”.

“What we experienced from the president of the West Indies Cricket Board a few days ago was ‘a monstrous perversion of common sense’,” he said to laughter at his use of the phrase coined by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart who was in the audience.

The tweet below, was sent by Gibraun Brijmohan and retweeted by Cameron:

“Gayle goes ..can’t buy a run ..let’s give him a retirement package ..can’t fail repeatedly and still front up based on reputation”.

“And I say that because he is the chief manager of the West Indies team. And for him to be the one to retweet a statement by someone that denigrates the iconic player that Chris Gyale is, is exactly what we do not want from managers to workers.”

Murrell, who was addressing the topic of leadership, said a manager’s job was to make employees feel they were the best they could be, and Gayle would not have felt that way.

“But I suspect that he can rebound. It might have also been used by the president as a way to motivate, but I think that publicly, to say that about a player is something that a manager should never do, and certainly, the Congress wants to condemn that kind of behaviour by persons who are in authority”.

He closed by saying the region’s cricket association’s would have the final say on March 7.

West Indies captain Jason Holder was also asked about the issue during his press conference ahead of tonight’s Cricket World Cup match against Zimbabwe.

“I am sure Chris will just put that behind him and move into this game now,” Holder said.

He was also asked if he felt it would “wake up” Gayle.

“Oh Chris is awake, I can assure you he is awake from the beginning of the tournament. Again, it is beyond our control, but that is done and dusted in my opinion. We just have to control what we can control and that is the cricket.” (MB/SAT)
