PRINCIPAL OF THE Cave Hill campus Sir Hilary Beckles is cautioning against insular and parochial ways of thinking about the University of the West Indies.
Speaking at the Research Week opening ceremony this morning, he said the role of the university was to reflect its people and ensure they never lose perspective.
He said West Indians were the most global people in the world and this was why he took exception when people questioned why Cave Hill’s sports complex was named after Jamaican Usain Bolt.
Sir Hilary said this was a contradiction of the West Indian way.
He also noted that the Caribbean was the perfect place to conduct research, as it was the place where politics, arts, fascism, democracy, terrorism and diseases such as hypertension and diabetes could all be found in rich abundance. (CA)
