OVER THE PAST WEEKS I have been agonising over the reasons that see West Indies cricket and the West Indies cricket team, with a rich history of producing cricketing legends, neck deep in mediocrity.
The only answer I can find is that “we like it so”.
Now, I have always believed that apart from the flair, all the West Indies gave to cricket was the potency of the four-pronged pace attack. Since then all we have done is to copy everything that proved successful to teams like England and Australia.
Darren Sammy was selected as captain of the team at a time when we had lost the respectability we once commanded.
He was not the most gifted player but he had the heart of a lion and, through his leadership, he was able to return some level of respectability to the team.
