HOBART, Australia – He didn’t score a run, take a wicket or clutch any spectacular catches, but West Indian Joel Wilson was a focus of attention in all of his matches at the ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The 48-year-old Trinidadian umpire has officiated in eight matches at the tournament. As the only West Indian official, he has flown the flag with aplomb.
The job of the umpire continues to be scrutinised with the advanced use of technology but, cool as a cucumber, Wilson has passed the grade in three on-field assignments, two stints as the television replay umpire and three as a fourth official.
“The experience has been unforgettable,” he told SUNSPORT. “Officiating with, learning from and building relationships with some of the best in the world is priceless towards my overall development as a cricket umpire.”
