Poultry farmers ‘must pressure Govt’

POULTRY FARMERS have been advised to pressure Minister of Agriculture Dr David Estwick to change the controversial tariff that allows for the importation of breaded and marinated chicken at a 20 per cent duty.

President of the Barbados Egg & Poultry Producers Association, Carlyle Brathwaite, made the call yesterday during a seminar at the Radisson Hotel where he charged that the imports were hurting the industry.

“We have found and seen where the loopholes are and how it can be dealt with,” said Brathwaite, pointing out that the United States had rejected the tax while Caricom – except for two countries – had also rejected it.
