POLICE ARE TAKING a different approach to fighting crime, especially gun-related offences, by directly targeting “hotspots” and so-called gang leaders.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for crime, Mark Thompson, told the DAILY NATION the new crime tactic was already achieving results, with the seizure of several firearms and the arrests of some known criminals.

“A major part of our investigations now involves a high degree of hotspot enforcement where we target the leaders or those in charge. If we arrest the leaders, they would not be able to influence others, and importantly those that are left behind must tell themselves that if the leaders get hold, they (authorities) will soon get me too,” Thompson said.
