Sir Hilary: I had to speak out

OUTGOING PRINCIPAL of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill campus Sir Hilary Beckles says it would have been “irresponsible” and “unprofessional” of him not to have given Government the grim facts about what the fee policy change would mean.

He was responding to a question yesterday during what was billed as his final media briefing before he takes over as vice chancellor of the UWI.

“It would be irresponsible of university leaders not to share with policymakers the consequences of policies so that they can adjust if they so desire, and this is what we . . . must do,” he said during the conference streamed live from the Cave Hill campus’ administration building.” (TY)
