Retired nurse voices concern for elderly

RETIRED PRINCIPAL nursing officer at the Geriatric Hospital, Roslyn Waithe, has suggested that Government step in to deal with the issue of delinquent relatives.

Waithe, who spent 43 years in the nursing profession, told the MIDWEEK NATION of stories of family members who took their elderly relatives to district hospitals and did not return or call to be updated on their care.

Even more appalling, Waithe said, was that many of these same family members cashed the pension cheques of the elderly and refused even to purchase a bar of soap for their upkeep. This was why she said a portion of retirement benefits should go towards facilitating the care of patients.
